Save the date! Saks Fifth Avenue will be having its friends & family sale from Thursday, Oct. 16th through Sunday, Oct. 19th. There is a lot of speculation whether invites or online promo codes will be emailed out, but everyone seems to confirm that on those days, head to Customer Service and pick up the F&F promotion card for your in-store purchases. This card may or may not contain a unique one-time-use online code as well.
However you cut it, 25% off clothes, bags, and shoes and 15% off cosmetics and fragrance is worth waiting for. There are some known brand exclusions: Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Prada/Miu Miu, and Louboutin. I will update this list when more details become public. I for one am going to finally get the slew of La Prairie products I need replenishing!
Additional note: If you are not located near a Saks store, it may be worth your time to give a store a call and ask the sales associate nicely if they will do a mail order to you with the F&F discount.

Anya Hindmarch for Target pre-pre-sale
Every time I leave the city, I always make a trip to Target. It is, improbably, the one thing I miss most from my suburban life (the second is owning a car). I am a big fan of the clothing collaborations, but I have yet to see a handbag collection that doesn't look just not quite good enough to carry. The Gryson line sucked, Botkier was so-so, but I'm anxious and optimistic about Anya Hindmarch's new line. (I am still sad I was out of town the weekend of the Bullseye Bodegas.)

New York Dog sample sale

I debated long and hard whether I wanted to do the Hermes sample sale. With all the marketing/buzz going on about it, I knew there would be an inevitable 2hr+ wait to get in. I decided to let the professionals tough it out which was probably smart thinking because it took them THREE hours to get in (but when they did, it was glorious). Reading the comments of the lucky souls who made it in, it seems like they are continuously restocking. Good to know-- guess I may drop by after all! This particular line item caught my eye:
"For non-equestrians, there are dog coats for $140."I wonder if there will be any left by late today?
And on a more personal and totally-non-topical note, the main reason I skipped the sale: my newly acquired ragdoll kitten, Meekus, cuddled in my lap.

BCBG fall sale
Three weekends ago, when it was pouring cats and dogs in the city, I had to make a run to the Container Store to get some things before our guests arrived. Bed Bath and Beyond being across the street, I ran in for some new dishwashing gloves. Normally I would not go into the TJ Maxx upstairs, but no one was out shopping so I mosey-ed on up to see what I could see. I went home with a Velvet shirtdress, Max Studio cardigan, and BCBG sweater.
BCBG is a fabulous choice for staples, and for less than retail, it's even better. Stock up on sweaters at their Fall Sale. (The TJ Maxx selection was really slim) What is actually on sale and what is not is very badly marked-- I noticed the promotional items are on the last page / at the end of the available selections of the regular priced clothing. LeSportsac sample sale update
I just got back from the LeSportsac sale, and I would like to report that although the early reports said it sucked and discounts weren't worth it, it was SO worth it today. All the non-Stella McCartney stock was 90% off, and the Stella stuff was 80% off. The rolling luggage was priced $84-95, and her shoulder bags varied from $50-70. I nabbed a tote and a hobo as Xmas presents for my younger sisters still in school, and I think they'll love the lightweight roominess these bags offer! It is supposed to be over at 4PM, but while I was there I heard rumors of staying open until 6PM. Stock is still pretty good... definitely worth a look if you're in the neighborhood! Working at J.Crew during my college years taught me a few things: 1) clean up after myself in the dressing room, 2) boys are way easier to sell to than women (oohs and ahhs work wonders), 3) how to obsessively and compulsively fold my entire wardrobe as if I used a folding board (and I am not alone), and 4) sometimes you get what you pay for, and sometimes you don't, but mostly you do.
To this day, my closet does still hold some pieces from way back yonder, and that, my friends, is a testament of its enduring quality. I do think the Rolexes are quite overboard though. Update: Racked.com has reported on Madison Avenue Spy's post on the inherent sucky-ness of this 'friends & family' event. As I suspected it is a clearance sale (or NYC euphemism "sample sale"), but even worse, it will be outlet store cast-offs!
I'd love to get insider info on this one, so if you're in the know, please comment below! This is being marketed as a 'friends & family', but it's not in-store and with discounts of up to 75%, I'm going to go out on a limb and call this a sample sale in disguise. I guess that label makes classy YSL a bit shy. Since the BWS was such a bust (and yes, I know I did not follow up like I promised, but I figured ranting about it was not a value-add to anyone), maybe whatever credit limit you've got left can look for goodies at the YSL 'friends & family' event.

Since cosmetics and skincare never go on sale, these beauty events are a big deal. If they did (go on sale) there would be no point in waiting until you got some made-in-China bag filled with samples. But maybe I'm just being cynical? The idea of buying my La Prairie from some sketchy internet storefront is starting to get to me, even if live.com is offering a generous cashback. I just may have to give in and go with the Neiman Marcus Beauty Event.

Papyrus friends & family 25% off, in-store only
I guess I'm old fashioned, but I love sending cards. And not just signing your name, but making it special with a nice hand-written note. Since I felt like I had purchased every one of Hallmark's square cards (those are my favorite), I moved on to Papyrus, whose cards have more of a hand-crafted feel. Hallmark's Crown Rewards program is free and accumulates points based on dollars spent, but Papyrus' membership costs $10/yr, but instead of waiting for rewards certificates, the bonuses are instantaneous. When you buy a batch of 4 cards, one of them is free. In August they also had a buy-2-get-1-free promotion which I took full advantage of, so I have definitely recouped my $10 investment and then some!
If you have a Papyrus membership make sure to go shopping between Sept 5-13, to get 25% off all purchases (even candles, printed stationary and albums) and 10% off any custom printing orders (like wedding invitations!).
