Saks 70% off (effectively)

Update: reader Caroline reports,
I did just decide to pop in. I figured, what do I have to lose, besides my sanity?! It was crazy (forget the 8th floor shoe dept - totally insane, people with piles and piles of shoe and boot boxes, very difficult to get someone to help you...). Same with 5th floor shoes and bags, and it seems they have a lot of inventory - when I left at around 12:30, an employee was bringing out dozens of Tory Burch tote bags and hand bags - canvas, patent, etc. All 50% off, plus another 50% presale. A Marc by Marc Jacobs leather bag I saw at Bloomingdales a couple of days ago at full price ($468) was 50% off, plus another 50% off presale. And there were lots of them. They were enforcing the Saks cardholder thing there, but definitely not everywhere else. First floor handbags was just completely nuts, so I didn't even bother to look. Overall, apparel was much less crazy - if you have the patience, you can get some great deals - some stuff is 60% off, with another 50% presale! And a lot is 40% off plus 50% presale. All in all, a fantastic sale, but frankly, it was a little unsettling - I kept thinking - THIS is Saks Fifth Avenue?? The atmosphere was a little weird, with employees and even some customers looking shell shocked.
I LOVE reader updates! Keep them coming (for anything)!!

In full swing, the Saks' cardholders can pre-sale at prices effectively 70% off. It is true chaos, as some sales associates respect the Saks-card-only rule and some do not. Consistent with its inconsistency, some stores have Gucci on sale, some do not, but you can be sure to find Prada, Marc Jacobs, Valentino, etc and shoes from Louboutin, Ferrragamo, and Chloe.

The sale officially opens to the public on Tuesday, but from what I'm reading online, it sounds like there won't be much left!! Don't bother calling-- many stores aren't even taking calls, and those that do are hanging up on people left right and center. If you are feeling brave, throw yourself into the fray and don't be afraid to use your elbows.

Madison Avenue Spy has neatly written out the details of how it gets to 70%. In-stores only.

The online component is not as good but gives an indication of greater discounts to come (i.e. Tuesday)
