I must say, if this is the last cut then count me out!! Women's shoes are only reduced to 60% off, and all the girls were buying them as if they were $10/pair. Personally, I'm glad I paid a little more for not having to deal with this, a measly 10%. I'm posting the discount list so everyone who is thinking of shopping today can get prepared, but I have to run to lunch at Per Se, and won't be able to post my final thoughts until much later today. If you're trooping it out to BWS, good luck!

FamousFashionsFound.com Labor Day sale
Try saying that three times fast! This small, totally cute website that is obsessively devoted to hunting down the things celebs wear is having a 25% off everything sale over Labor Day weekend. Use "LABORDAY25" on anything (even sale), but don't use your Firefox 3 browser... when I tried to add things to my cart, it would jump to the Search box (super annoying). I finally had to break down and open MSIE. ¡Uf!
Also, thought I would add: they only sell women's clothing and jewelry. No shoes, very few bags. And no men's. Sorry guys!

Email Discovery: Saks Labor Day bore... sale
If last seasons' goods aren't your thing, then pop over to Saks, where some more recent styles are already on sale. Really, I expected so much more from Saks, but maybe their recent earnings release has left them skittish of slashing prices.
Hopefully they have enough coin to pay Christina Aguilera & Co. for ripping off her song (see the whole promo email)! Clicking through only takes you the clothes on sale. For the shoes, look here.
Barney's Warehouse Sale report: Final week, Friday
As promised, I went to the BWS this morning, and got some interesting information. First off, if you went yesterday, don't bother going today (or tomorrow for that matter) as discounts have not changed since yesterday (expand below to see price list). When I was checking out, the nice cashier told me that the one and only discount left for the entire sale would happen on Sunday. So go Sunday and don't even bother with Monday (the last day). And then he proceeded to take only 40% off the shirt I bought (instead of 50%). I didn't notice it at the time, but I guess I got charged $9.90 for that tidbit of information. Oh well, I guess that's money well spent...
Women
The shoes are starting to look ravaged, and at 40% off the tag price, that only seems fair. I paid $177 for a gorgeous pair of pristine Louboutins (upper right photo) which comes out to 23.9% of the total retail price. That's ridiculous! If you want shoes, GO, or there will be no Manolos left for you. There are still those strange flat wedgie Pradas and plenty of Costume National and Barney's brand, but Louboutin is running thin and the ones left are those really sparkly ones that look very Vegas showgirl-y (if you've been to BWS then you know what I'm talking about). The clothes I took a sweep through, and all I can say is pants, pants, pants! Other than that, the sweaters are mostly snagged, the shirts are dirty and stained with make-up, and good luck finding anything of value in the accessories bin. The single ray of light is that the dressing area is mercifully sparse and easy to manage.
Men
Shoes are totally picked over ("raped and pillaged" were my male shopping partner's exact words). Suits have gone faster than they did at the last sale, so selection of the nice stuff is probably getting hard to find. There's more Varvatos here than you can shake a stick at, and my friend is of the opinion that it is dangerously close to becoming the next Barney's stock brand. Tons of business shirts left, but at only 50% off, guys seem to be waiting it out. I've also included pictures of the men's shirts rummage bins. As you can see, at only 40% off, they are still plentiful and totally chaotic to sift through.
Chelsea Passage & Childrens
There is an adorable tent that I've read about in a celebrity magazine somewhere, although I could only find a blog post about it when I looked. Retail $227, but at 60%, your child could have a toy that is very popular with Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, and Britney Spears! I really wanted to get it for our dog, but my husband said no. He's no fun.
As you can see, it is a MESS!
Found a picture of the sparkly Louboutins left! Also available in Magenta!
Tourneau sample sale
Need a new watch? Soiffer Haskin, a professional sample sale organizer, is running a Tourneau clearance/sample sale starting Saturday, Sept. 6th. They will carry every brand that's in the retail stores except for Rolex and Patek Philippe, which is still not bad if that means there will be Breitlings, Omegas, Cartier, etc. The selection will be both brand new and pre-owned. They will also apparently have designer & estate jewelry. Weird. Expect 50-70% off though.
What: Tourneau sample sale
Where: Soiffer Haskin, 317 West 33rd St. (W of 8th Ave./Penn Station); (718) 747-1656
When: Saturday, Sept. 6th through Thursday, Sept. 11th; 9AM to 6:30PM daily
How: HopStop it to Penn Station

Microsoft Live Search cashback
I am *super* behind the times on this! Microsoft Live Search is offering a cashback/rebate from certain online stores (mostly little kinda-shady looking ones) if you access it via their live.com search feature in their bid to compete with Google's shopping search feature.
Apparently they started this in early June, and I totally missed the boat on their eBay partnership :( but they are having some good deals with Zappos.com, and Petsmart is a 30% rebate! (I mean, why else would I have just ordered something from backcountry.com?!)
http://search.live.com/cashback
>> see all stores here: http://search.live.com/cashback/stores
>> FAQ: http://search.live.com/cashback/faq
>> terms & conditions: http://help.live.com/help.aspx?project=tou&mkt=en-us
Things I learned from their Terms & Conditions:
- You must register to use the cashback program first, and you can do this if you have a Microsoft Live ID.
- You must use their search to get to the website you want so that they can track you and your purchases.
- Don't let the browser window go inactive while shopping or you might lose your session.
- You have to wait 60 days to have the opportunity to 'cash out' your rebates (via check, paypal, or checking account deposit)
Things I read on a messageboard but was unable to verify by reading the T&C:
- They will cap a rebate from a single transaction at $250 (i.e. if you spend $1000 at petsmart, you only get $250 cashback)
- You are limited to 3 cashback transactions
Since I just learned about it and needed to get some things anyway, I have made purchases (2 to be precise) online via Microsoft Live Search. My account does show that I am due credit in 59 days :) I am saving my 3rd transaction for when CosmeticMall.com (how shady does that sound?!) gets more La Prairie in stock. If you're already in the know and have used Microsoft Live Search cashback, let me know!
Barney's Warehouse Sale report: Final week, Thursday
I have not yet made it to the BWS today to check out the offerings, but Racked.com has a lovely photo of the price list available (below). If I remember correctly, 60% is the max discount on shoes, so tomorrow may bring 50% and Sat/Sun 60%. I believe the RTW/most stuff will definitely hit at least 75% off in the end.
I may go yet to the sale today or not, but I do know I am definitely going tomorrow morning :) Read the full Racked.com post here.
Email discovery: Bloomingdale's Labor Day sale
For finding truly spectacular bargains, I admit NOTHING beats department stores and especially Bloomingdale's. Where else could I possibly have found this James Perse long cardigan (retail $275) for $44?! Bottom line: it is always worth your time to check out Bloomingdale's. Extra tip: use those handy price scanners to double-check the sale prices on things you want. 40% of the time I find that the price is lower than the tag says :)
Bloomingdale's sale starts today, both in-store and online. View their cute email here in its entirety (it was too huge to post)
Email Discovery: bebe Labor Day sale
Now, I typically do not condone shopping at bebe (unless you are in college or work in a bar), but in the Labor Day sale spirit, I will post the interesting parts of their email I received this morning. The best deals will be in-store, but if you feel inclined to online shop, $150+ will get you free shipping with coupon "HOTDRESS". SKANKDRESS is more like it, though.
Adidas Labor Day discount
We've seen it before, but if you're inclined to get sporty this fall, adidas will take $20 off your order of $120+ with coupon "TWENTYOFF". For those of us who just like to look sporty, Stella McCartney's new Fall/Winter line is one of her best, not weirdly deconstructed like some pieces past.
Scoop Labor Day sale, starts tomorrow
If you're disappointed with the level of discounting going on a BWS or afraid to fight the throngs at the Intermix sale, perk up. Starting tomorrow, all Scoop locations will take an additional 50% off their current sale items. There you'll find trendy alice + olivia, all those designer jeans, men's James Perse, DVF, etc.
What: Scoop Labor Day Sale
Where: every location; Soho: 473-475 Broadway (btw Broome/Grand Sts) 212-925-3539; UES: 1273-1277 Third Ave. (btw 73/74th Sts) 212-535-5577; Meatpacking: 861 Washington St. @ W. 13th St. 212-691-1905
When: Friday, 8/29 - Monday, 9/1, normal operating hours
How: HopStop it!
Email discovery: Smashbox Beauty Blowout
Started by two brothers from the Max Factor family, I have always thought Smashbox was top notch for those events where you need to look perfect and not too unlike a flawless porcelain mannequin. It's not everyday we need to go the whole nine yards, but when we do, we know where to turn, and this is why it's the go-to for all the fashionistas and glamazons out there.
I skimmed their so called 'blow-out', and although I am less than blown away by their selection, they offer free shipping on everything, and since there's no tax if you live outside CA, NY, or WA, I figure it wouldn't hurt to post it here.
One cute thing I saw: a lucite handled travel brush set, for all those classy girls who want their make-up tools to match their heels.
A $180 value! that was $84 and now, hold on to your hats-- $63!
Email discovery: eLuxury Labor Day extra 30% off sale
It's official: Labor Day shopping has officially begun! eLuxury is taking another 30% off sale prices. Doing a spot check, a gorgeous Derek Lam dress that retailed for $1690 which was previously discounted to $1015 is now $710.50, making it about 60% off.

Mulberry sale report: It's a bonanza
Mulberry sample sale update from Racked.com! Prognosis: GOOD!!!
"We're finally back from the Mulberry sample sale ... 45 minutes to an hour to get in, at least 30 to pay. It's definitely worth the time and effort, though, especially if you are the type that saves up all year to splurge on a designer handbag or two.
... eager shoppers ran the four flights up to the sale while the less manic waited for the elevator ... The selection of bags and wallets is good—really good—and throughout our time there we noticed staffers restocking.
Of course, though severely marked down, the items aren't exactly cheap: we spotted some ugly buffed metallic bags in maroon and green for $699; pink patent purses for $599; and a style of bag called the Roxanne in python for $1195 (this one seemed popular, as there were only two left on the table when we were there). As for the small leather goods, keychains, credit card holders and photo frames are priced at $49; leather gloves are $79; wallets are $99; clutches are $199; ostrich and lizard skin large wallets are $399 and belts and hats are the cheapest at only $19. There were also a few racks of clothing (all still prohibitively priced at hundreds and hundreds of dollars) that no one was touching."Full article on Racked.com
Intermix sale report: looks good
Not a full report because I haven't checked it out yet, but I saw a girl getting on the 1 train at 18th Street with an armload of Intermix bags, so I assume it must be worth visiting. (The 1 train is a hike from the sale, so I was surprised to see anyone with shopping bags!) She didn't have a Mulberry bag, though, so maybe she didn't go/know? If any of you check these out, let me know!
Barney's Warehouse Sale report: Final week, Wednesday
Another day of no change! I'm quite surprised by this-- they've totally changed their discounting strategy apparently. I wonder if they plan on discounting tomorrow or Friday or will make us duke it out over the weekend...

Barney's Warehouse Sale report: Final week, Tuesday
Dear BWS followers: I did swing by this morning to have a look at the price list, and I am sad to say it is the same from yesterday. Nothing exciting here, so as you were, my friends, as you were.
Bonanza: Mulberry sample sale starts tomorrow
A case study in efficiency... The Mulberry Sample Sale which only runs Wed & Thurs is in the same building as the Intermix Sample Sale, albeit a different entrance and floor. Still, not a bad haul for one day's trek. Henry Ford would be proud (ok, that may be a stretch).
Previous Mulberry S.S. attendees vouch for the long lines you're sure to see. They said last year's selection was fabulous and the prices (up to 75% off) can't be beat. This time around, expect to find spring/summer 2008 stuff for both girls and boys: Mabel bags and Poppy bags for her, messengers for him, and weekender bags, leather accessories and RTW for both.
What: Mulberry Sample Sale

Botkier & Loomstate sales on gilt.com
Tomorrow is a good day for the trendy and eco-conscious. Since I know there are many devotees of Botkier out there, I have requested sample pricing on the upcoming Gilt.com sale. It looks like the discounts will be about 50% which is not too shabby. Organic cotton Loomstate clothing will be available for 40% of retail.

Email discovery: Off 5th Labor Day sale starts today
Wily Off 5th would like to entice you to start your Labor Day sale shopping early. Starting today, stores are Buy One Get One 50% off. Not a bad deal if you are shopping for last season's Chanel or St. John.
Barney's Warehouse Sale report: Final week, Monday
Over the weekend they toyed with our emotions, craftily marking down clothing but leaving the shoe prices intact. Today, shoes are now 25% off. Since I did not visit BWS all weekend, I took a good lengthy perusal of what's left, and here's the rundown.
Womens
Shoes are discounted 25%, but stock is dwindling. Very few pairs of Louboutins left, although still a good selection of Manolos (now $195+) and increasing selection of Prada and Miu Miu. Although I heard rumors of Chanel merchandise over the weekend, alas, there was nary a Chanel shoe to be found. I was pretty surprised to see Balenciagas still on the racks, and at 25% off their ~$700 prices tags, they are a pretty good bargain at $525 for you avant-garde types. I saw the Dries Van Noten leather Japanese-style flip-flops I admired still there, now $120.
On the whole, clothes are starting to look like they've been sorely mistreated. I did find some pristine looking gems-- especially if Narcisco Rodriguez and Proenza Schouler are your style. Another fun find: a bright pink Miu Miu structured long top/booty dress for $113.40 upon markdown.
Mens
This is where to shop. Prices are not bad and selection is still fantastic. I saw many men trying on suits. Surprisingly, more men in suits than in shoes, where they are now 25% off. Men's button-down shirts are only 25% off, but the selection is great, especially if you love Etro or Armani. Jeans are 40% off and the shirt bins are still full for Medium and Large sizes. This is also a great time to check out the outerwear/light coats selection for the impending fall.
Men's shoes continues to impress, as there were still Prada loafers and Paul Smith sneakers on the racks. There seem to be an abundance of funky sneakers, so if that's your market, I'm sure there will still be some by next mark-down.
Chelsea Market & Baby
I don't know how they managed to dig up more weird crap to sell, but they imported new housewares in and now have a big bin for Baby. If you have a friend popping one out (and who doesn't these days?!), get some cute onesies for 40% off their $9 and $12 price tags. They are all the same pattern - white with different colored lions (pink/blue/yellow), but for $6, why the hell not?
Sorry for the glare!
Email discovery: Bliss, 10% off
Need to stock up on your beauty secrets (Rodial, Prevage, or Natura Bissé ring a bell)? Or, maybe you haven't gotten your Zeno yet? Now through Aug. 27th, take 10% off your order of $100+ Bliss.com order using coupon "088921". Times like this I really curse La Prairie for their selective distribution network. Damn them!! ***I read the fine print to sadly note this offer is not good on La Mer products (only). Way to spoil the fun, Bliss.
Barney's Warehouse Sale report: Final week
The final week of the Barney's Warehouse Sale is upon us, and thus far it has been disappointing. Prices started higher, discounts have been lackluster, and the shoes have still not gone on sale! I know this will not last forever, and I will not give up. Like those before me, I will doggedly pursue this mythic El Dorado of cheap goodies. Every day I shall visit the BWS and report back any findings. I just hope I have the stamina and patience to see me through.

Bonanza: Intermix sample sale
Still thirsty for the hunt or just a glutton for punishment? If your credit card hasn't melted into a pool of plastic-y mess yet, cute boutique Intermix joins the sales melee with their bi-annual sample sale. While the scene at the Barney's Warehouse Sale is currently rather tame, this, assuredly, may not be. An online recon mission has given me some handy tidbits of information: long lines, go for clothes-- not really the place to get bags, big warehouse space, lots of mirrors, apparently Chloé is the hotness at this sale, and expect a free-for-all as prices plummet the last day (Aug. 28th).
What: Intermix Sample Sale
Where: Metropolitan Pavilion @ 110 West 19th St. (West of 6th Ave.); New York, NY 10011; 212-741-5075
When: Tuesday, 8/26 - Thursday, 8/28, 9AM – 8PM daily
How: Subway: 1 train to 18th St.; F,L,V to 14th St. or F,V to 23rd St.; R,W to 23rd St.

Thanks Racked.com!!!
When I saw that my pageviews spiked while I was at dinner, I knew something special had happened! Yes indeed, Racked.com, one of my favorite shopping/deal sites, posted a synopsis of my Barney's update!!! Even more touching, Izzy Grinspan called me a blogger, even though I only started this a couple weeks ago :) Thanks guys!!!!
Email discovery: Off 5th, 20% off everything
If you plan on visiting Off 5th this weekend, print this out and take it with you for 20% off your entire purchase.
Email discovery: Agent Provocateur, final sale up to 70% off
Always a fan of pretty underthings, New York ladies probably spend more on lingerie than normal people would or should. However, I would say the kinky cake goes to the Brits. Start a fire in your bedroom with 50-70% off (depending on the style) on eye-popping satiny, lacy, 100% sexy, pieces from Agent Provocateur. Warning for those at work: they don't airbrush out certain areas of the female anatomy.
Barney's Warehouse Sale report: First cut
As predicted, Barney's Warehouse Sale took their first round of discounts-- essentially 25% off almost everything (some things had to be tagged) EXCEPT shoes. Needless to say, that was quite disappointing, as prices remain the same as they would be from a normal sale (see my example to the right).
Womens
Shoes were still abundant for size 6 and 6.5, with great brands available. Lots of Louboutins and Manolos, with Pradas, Miu Mius, and a pair of Dries Van Noten leather flipflops that were soooo comfortable (but still $180). Not as much Marc Jacobs as we've seen in previous sales, AND, thank the lord, less Barney's brand shoes.
Clothes were the same riff-raff, I didn't see anything spectacular except for a Prada zip-up sweater that was, at 25% off, around $150 (retail $895). A lot of the designer tops seem to have been sold (or perhaps not put out?) and there are pants galore! Want Balenciaga pants for $150? Go get them.
Unfortunately I got there with only 30 minutes to browse before they not-so-subtle-y closed shop, so I didn't get to go downstairs to check out the men's section. Sorry guys! I promise I'll do better next time!
It was really messy b/c I showed up 30 minutes to closing :)

Urban Decay, friends & family 30% off
In the city you not only have to dress the part, but you gotta look the part. Get the things you need for that perfect smokey eye during the Urban Decay friends & family event. Save 30% on the essentials like eyelid primer, 24/7 eye pencils, and that finishing shimmery eye shadow through Aug. 28th. Code "FFL30"
Email discovery: Kenneth Cole 30% off
The retail industry is posting big losses, luxury fashion houses are rethinking their strategies, and we will continue to see the red tags (as stores see red numbers). I am amazed at all the shops that are offering steep discounts on current Fall/Winter clothing. Revolve's first-time-customer offer, of course, WiNK has a 30% off Daily Candy offer (code "DCDEA8"), and now Kenneth Cole has joined their ranks. Until Sept. 2, select fall/winter items both in-store and online will be marked down 30%, and you can take another 30% off the sale stuff. No coupon code necessary, prices as stated (except for sale).
Wednesday, August 20, 2008
Email discovery: Bloomingdale's 15% off for charity
I don't know why Bloomingdale's would send me a coupon at 4:48PM that is only valid for today, but here it is. Maybe it is an unspoken statement regarding how much they value their charity offers. For the rest of today, purchases made online and from select stores can be discounted for 15%. For online purchases, use code "FASHION". For in-store use, print out the email.
Tuesday, August 19, 2008
Revolve Clothing, 30% off for new customers
I must be asleep at the wheel, but REVOLVE Clothing.com has been offering a 30% off to new customers for a while as part of a Daily Candy promotion way back when. The offer still stands for now. A "new customer" is someone who has a unique email address and credit card (same billing address is ok). The 30% discount applies to your entire first-time purchase sans any of the restricted brands (below). Yes, the page loads all wonky, but if you enter your email address and hit coupon! it should work.
Fine print: Please remember that due to the manufacturer’s request, we are not allowed to use code matching and coupons on the following brands: Kooba, Rebecca Minkoff, Gustto, Treesje,Goldenblue,7 for All Mankind, Hudson Jeans, Nudie Jeans, True Religion, Rock and Republic, Joe's Jeans, Citizens of Humanity and Paige Denim, Lutz and Patmos, Jovovich Hawk, Vena Cava. Cheap Monday, Clu, Sea, Common Projects, Rogues Gallery, Rose, A Lawless, Dolce and Gabbana, Band of Brands and Botkier. I understand that this can be an inconvenience, but unfortunately it is a restriction placed upon us by the manufacturer.
Email discovery: Anya Hindmarch sample sale
I received notice that Anya Hindmarch is having their first-ever End of Season sample sale. The website is SO slow that I think that all of the UK has converged upon it.
I love Anya Hindmarch! She is so huge in Europe and Asia, but not really known in the US. Her bags are quality, and I would liken the style to Tod's with more flare. Go to the sale.
Email discovery: Bliss blowout event, up to 70% off (clothes + jewelry)
Extra 10% off with code: 088920
I must admit I am quite wonderous at why Bliss Spa would care to enter the world of non-skincare retail. As one of the fastest-growing and hottest spa centers in the Western world, perhaps they aren't seeing enough margin on the $200 facial or $70 brazilian bikini wax? Maybe their product availability, even supplemented by the likes of Laboratoire Remede, Kate Somerville, and La Mer don't bring in the revenue they need to stay afloat?
While I do respect the online exclusivity they have (or had) to MBT sneakers, Bliss now also shills Ella Moss tops, Alexis Bittar jewelry, and random other things. I will say their selection is small, so most certainly carefully-selected and well thought out. I suppose they had a 'Bliss-girl' image in mind when picking what to sell, and that girl dresses slightly bohemian, accessorizes with expensive Anthropologie-esque jewelry, and, of course, has great skin. If that's your bag, then be that girl for up to 70% off.
Bonanza: Net-A-Porter.com summer clearance
There are two different evolving realities which are fueling the growing number of discount designer online shops, as well as the legitimate very expensive ones. 1) As women get more accustomed to a designer's fit and style, trying things on becomes less of an issue, and 2) the rising faith in internet security which allows one to comfortably purchase of hundreds or thousands of dollars of goods online via credit card. Amazing.
One of those sites which use both to their advantage, Net-A-Porter, is having their summer clearance event. I love their designer selection-- I remember when they were the first online retailer to sell Jimmy Choos! Using the code 'SUMMER' code at checkout, you can take an additional 20% off some current clearance items (it is very clearly marked).

Favorite sites: gilt.com
Today women all over the country have the opportunity to grab sample sale prices with only a speedy internet connection and a credit card. This is the age of online sample sales, and along the side bar I've named a few that I just adore. One of my favorite is gilt.com. They are a well-oiled machine, consistently offering the better brands on sale most often. Habitual womens – Wednesday, August 20
I was very surprised today when I was contacted by their marketing department. Gilt Groupe has offered instant membership to readers of my blog! (And no, unfortunately I do not get credit for sign-ups) They also gave me a preview on some upcoming sales, which is really cool. There are some great deals to be had! Sign up here.

Favorite sites: YOOX.com
In the beginning I was in love with BlueFly, but as they got more mature, their prices grew with them, and I soon found myself prospecting for new sites to mine. Then Ashford.com and SmartBargains had their time in the sun, but they have since cut back on their offerings.
Then one fateful day a few years ago, my very fashion savvy HR director introduced me to his favorite go-to online shopping site: YOOX.com. In addition to the YOOX.com conglomerate storefront, the YOOX Group includes an online retailing subsidiary which serves designer labels Valentino, Emporio Armani, Marni, and Diesel for their online retail sales needs. An Italian firm that operates globally, YOOX.com tends to have great 'retail' prices for European labels, probably a function of being in the EU and all. This also means, though, that lovely pieces from these collections make it onto YOOX.com.
The mother lode: YOOX.com is currently having their summer sale, and my dears, it puts all others to shame. They have 15,000+ PAGES of things on sale, including a Balenciaga dress I adore, Prada pants and blazers, and Valentino goodies.

Barney's Warehouse Sale update
While perusing my favorite blogs, a very interesting comment on Racked.com caught my eye:
More inventory is coming from their Beverly Hills Warehouse Sale so the selection should get even better. Once their Beverly Hill sale ends on Sunday all their goods get sent to the New York Warehouse Sale so it's worth it to keep checking everyday and see what new goods they've received.I was planning on popping by again on Wednesday morning. How exciting! I'll bring my camera to try and get some pictures too.
BCBG sale extravaganza, extra 20%
BCBG is currently running their Sale Extravaganza, an additional 20% off all current sale items. I remember discovering BCBG over 6 years ago, and since then his classic styles have always been a staple in my wardrobe. It's amazing to me how much celebs love it when it's not the most expensive label in the world. Maybe they are more sensible than we give them credit for?

Barney's Warehouse Sale report: Mens
Mens (as told to me by my tried-and-true male shopping companion)
On the mens side of things, Day 1 had plenty to offer – assuming you had plenty of money to spend. We weren't yet into the grab-a-bag-and-throw-everything-you-see-into-it type of shopping that you get in the final weekend. Instead, today was more suited to someone who is looking to drop 2-3 grand for some really really nice stuff at just around half-off or attain that singular item missing from his couture collection.
If you’re one of the first ones in, everything is still extraordinarily neat, a strange site for BWS. At the start, it looks like mens shoes are 50% off: Prada shoes abound on the racks, with fine leather loafers marked down ~$300 and sneakers ~$200+. The shoe section was clearly the most popular destination, as it remained a mob scene from opening through several hours later. If shoes are your thing, arrive at 7:20AM to get in line, and RUN, then GRAB whatever you can before the heathens behind you make it to the racks. Even arriving a little bit late (I wandered around a bit first), then pushing through the throng, you could still find a nice selection of expensive shoes.
Suits, although plentiful, were pretty disappointing price-wise. Suits that retail $1400-2000+ were marked at $800+, and the cheapest suits on the rack still clocked in around $600. A handful of gems did hang from the racks though, like $450 Zegna “Couture” line business shirts going for $170, various Paul Smith items (canvas shoes $109, button-down sweater $100, socks $19), James Perse t-shirts ($30), Etro business shirts ($140) and plenty of Armani jackets and shirts. The usual selection of Varvatos and Barney’s house brand filled a lot of the still-neatly-arranged bins and racks.
All in all, the best “deals” on Day 1 were probably to be found in the far back corner, where tailored-then-rejected jackets and pants were going for $200 a piece – leaving you to play a high-stakes fashion version of Memory/Concentration trying to piece a full suit back together for a nice little bit of sweat equity. Socks also appeared to be a dark horse sleeper in all of this, as a single gentleman grabbed a trash bag and literally dived into the bin Michael Phelps-style, raiding every non-duplicate, non-Barney’s brand of sock in site. I’m thinking he knew exactly what he was doing and made out pretty darn well.
Barney's Warehouse Sale report: Womens
This morning I pulled myself out of bed and got to the BWS at around 7:50AM. I was fairly deep in line, in front of the Verizon building, but when they opened the floodgates it moved right along, and I was in by 8:10. I noticed immediately that they changed up the floorplan of the sales racks, and I think it's a lot better. For some odd reason, though, they gave the Chelsea Market section much more room, which it definitely doesn't need. Also strange: they were handing out the clear trash bags already. Quite presumptuous.
Womens
Absolutely breathtaking selection of shoes for size 6. The downer: not the discount you'd expect from BWS. Full racks of Manolos, Louboutins, with some Balenciagas, Choos, Pradas sprinkled in. Prices for the expensive stuff were still $300+ and the lesser expensive hovered around $200. You could go to a great Saks sale and get the same shoe for the same price (and less hassle). Disappointing, but there's always next week (and next!).
Tops and Pants selection was so-so. Kate Moss' TopShop line had a couple of racks, but there were just tons and tons of Barney's co-op and private label clothing, with real designers interspersed. A lot of Helmut Lang. Of course, as promised I went straight for some 3.1 Phillip Lim pants and found only 1 pair and ended up supplementing my pants need with a pair by Alexander Wang. Prices range $80-120 here although I found a really cute button-down Marc Jacobs work blouse for $60, but it was a bit sheer for the office. I also picked up a $9 Vince long-sleeved babydoll top that was adorable but got lost in the try-on shuffle. Go find it! It's cute!! Clothing in sizes 2,4,6 was quickly ending up on the dressing area floor.
Ready-to-wear was fit to burst! Awesome selection of Miu Miu, Armani, Narcisco Rodriguez, etc. This section has been seriously bulked up. I snapped up a couple of Dries Van Noten tops that were 60% off. Prices ranged from $300-700. As always, the larger percentage of the selection is in larger sizes.
I saw a gorgeous Pucci trench coat just waiting for anyone who wears size 12. Other than that, there were Theory and Prada coats (which I have never seen before at BWS). I didn't even bother with the rummage bins for knitteds, accessories, and crappy bags. I heard some excited squeals from the denim area, though.
Oh, one big complaint about the sales floor re-org: the "wall of mirrors" idea, although conceptually sound, sucks in practice. It forces women to trample over each other (and all the clothes on the floor) to get to a mirror. And of course you have the ones who park themselves in front of them. The problem here is they are 'protected' by the wall and other parkers, and there's not really a way for others to push them out (there's no where to go!).
Overall impression: Although I did get a few great purchases, my overall impression is: it was better in May. I feel there were quite a few first-timers, which may be a result of all the advertising and promotion BWS is doing. As I expected, it's just too soon to break out the trash bags. I didn't spring for any shoes at these prices, so I'm hoping the great selection keeps as I check back over the next 2 weeks. I can tell you this, though: I'm really looking forward to August 29th.

Suggested guidelines for successfully surviving the BWS
In preparation for the melee, here are some things to remember:
- Wear shoes that are easy to take on and off, and keep track of them. I've seen women hunting for their own shoes after being too absorbed in trying on everything around them. Also, don't wear socks unless you're going for boots.
- There are no changing rooms, just a 'changing area' near a nook alongside the wall for women. Go in a bodysuit or wear underwear you wouldn't mind everyone (even men) seeing. I went jeans shopping with a cute British friend once, and her sexy lacy thong attracted quite a bit of attention. For men, it's pretty much a free-for-all. Guys shopping for suits should probably bring a friend to hold their clothes as they strip down in the aisle.
- Don't carry a purse. If you are holding a handbag that is bigger than just a clutch, you'll be asked to check it. This not only causes needless stress, but really costs you some valuable time in getting into the mix.
- Don't loiter. If there are multiple pieces of what you want, chances are they will still be there in a week. If I can avoid being in the midst of women shoving and furiously grabbing at racks, I do. If this is your one and only trip and you are feverishly trying to decide what to keep or throw away, move away from the angry women who will be reaching through you to get stuff.
- If you want to find a 'safe spot' to rest but aren't ready to leave just yet, go hide in the Chelsea Market section downstairs, by mens tops. The only places to sit down are for trying on shoes.
- Be nice to the staff. Unfortunately they can't really hook you up in any form or fashion, but just imagine having to smile at (and clean up after) hordes of tense grabby people overflowing with adrenaline.
Good luck, my fellow New Yorkers. See you at the races tomorrow!
Barney's Warehouse Sale NYC starts tomorrow
And now the time has come, this glorious bi-annual event which brings me multiple shopping orgasms every time, never fail. I admit I have a serious BWS problem. When I think of what lies ahead, my pulse quickens, I feel light-headed. I admit I've secretly (maybe not so secretly, actually) been anticipating this event since May. Hmm, how would I translate this sensation for the average man? Remember that feeling of complete elation when the US relay team touched the wall a hair quicker than those French tossers and showed them what's up? Yeah, it's kind of like that, but instead we're racing for designer gold.
Tomorrow morning many people will start lining up as early as 7:00AM at 255 W. 17th St. between 7th/8th Ave., waiting with bated breath until the door is flung open at 8:00AM.
While it may be natural and instinctual for you to go into a frenzied state on your first visit, here are some things to remember:
1. The BWS lasts for 3 weeks. This, my friends, is an endurance race. Always shop strategically.
2. Shoes are replenished everyday.
3. Prices continue to drop as the sale progresses. Markdowns happen on a weekly basis.
4. The last price slash occurs the Friday before the last weekend*. In this case, August 29th.
* See below for thoughts on this
My shopping strategy for the Barney's Warehouse Sale
This is my personal plan of attack, formulated through experience and designed for maximum coverage, efficiency, and monetary value.
Opening weekend (Thursday or Friday)
- If there is something you know you want, go for it. This past spring I was on a mission for Louboutins. This year I've got my sights set on some 3.1 Phillip Lim pants. (They just fit so well!)
- Head straight for the 'hot' clothes and quickly survey the inventory. Last time it was Kate Moss' TopShop line, tank tops discounted to $16. It sold like Tom Ford snuggled with each piece. I presume it will be more of her stuff this time around too. Most of of what makes it to BWS are the larger sizes, so if you're on the smaller side, use it to your advantage to be nimble.
- Check out men's shoes and suits. Having much less inventory to sell off, men's shoes are not replenished so often. If you're looking for a couture designer suit, now is the best time because they are rarely discounted as the sale progresses. For non-designer suits, hold out if you can.
- Peruse the coats and jackets, swimwear, and ready-to-wear. If the pushing and shoving is minimal around the S/M/L bins of tops, it's worth having a look.
During weekdays
After the initial weekend, BWS starts at 10AM. Get there early and look at shoes. As I mentioned before, they are replenished everyday, at random, so you may find some spectacular Louboutins or Manolos pop up one lucky Wednesday. This is also a much more civil time to look through the racks of clothing in the middle of the floor and try-on, if need be.
On the last Friday of the sale (August 29th)
Take the day off and line up early. You probably think I'm joking or totally insane, but you're wrong and maybe I am. For the past 4 years that I've gone, BWS has done progressive mark-downs the last 3 days (50% off additional on Friday, 60% Saturday, 75% on Sunday), but this past Spring, they took the final mark-down on the Friday before, of 60%, on the majority of the items (including Women's shoes and men's suits) and it stayed the keel all weekend. I have a feeling they will do this again. You might say, but Tina, I only need to take the morning half of the day off! Wrong, gentle reader. Post-BWS, you will want to scream your joy off the rooftops and revel in your conquests (and maybe take a nap). As well you should. It is well deserved.
Why the madness? What's the big deal?
At the beginning of the sale, prices are 50-60% off retail, and come closing weekend, women's clothes and shoes are discounted up to 80% or better. I've scored Louboutin Mary Jane espadrilles for $50 (retail $600) and a Marc Jacobs top for $15 (retail $225). The average price of the tops you buy is probably $25. During the last weekend women literally go so nuts that the staff will give you a clear lawn-sized TRASH BAG for you to throw your goodies into and haul around like Santa Claus, and believe you me, it never felt so good to be that fat ass-clown. Men's clothing also gets as cheap as it will, although it never really reaches the sale levels of Women's. Varvatos and Zegna shirts can be had for $40, button-down business shirts are discounted an additional 60-75% off their $75-140 BWS price tags. Sweaters and cardigans are around $60-120 depending on designer, style and fabric.
I hope you're getting excited, and I guess even if you're not, I'm excited enough for the both of us.
